Which Wood to Choose for Your Fingerboard Deck
Share
Not all wood is created equal. From classic Canadian Maple to rare Burl, each species brings a different feel, look, and personality to your fingerboard. Here's your complete guide to choosing the right wood for your build.
🍁 A) Canadian Maple — The Classic for a Reason
This is the wood that built modern skate culture: tight grain, consistent feel, and a clean look that makes graphics and engraving pop.
- Ride feel: Snappy pop, balanced weight, crisp sound.
- Why it's premium: Even when it's the "standard," good maple is about consistency — and consistency takes careful selection and finishing.
Tell us your size (32 / 34mm) and finish (lacquer shine or beeswax smooth) and we'll build it for you.
🖤 B) Ebony — Dark, Dense, and Unapologetic
Ebony has that deep, natural black/brown tone that looks expensive even before you add any art. It's not flashy — it's quiet confidence.
- Ride feel: Heavier, solid, "locked-in" feel with a deep sound.
- Why it's premium: Dense woods take more patience in shaping and finishing, and good pieces are harder to source without defects.
If you want a stealth build, ebony is the move.
🌾 C) White Ash — Bright Grain with a Lively Snap
Ash has a bold, open grain that looks "alive" under finish — especially in macro shots. It's the kind of wood that makes every board feel a little different.
- Ride feel: Light-to-medium weight, quick pop, energetic response.
- Why it's premium: Open grain needs extra attention in finishing to look clean and feel smooth.
Great if you want a natural look that still turns heads.
🍂 D) Mahogany — Warm, Smooth, and Timeless
Mahogany brings that deep reddish warmth that looks vintage and premium at the same time. It's a "grown-up" wood without losing skate energy.
- Ride feel: Smooth, controlled, slightly softer vibe (in a good way).
- Why it's premium: The beauty is in the finish — getting that warm depth takes careful sanding and layering.
Perfect for a clean custom engraving.
🎋 E) Bamboo — Light, Clean, and Modern
Bamboo has a unique layered look that feels fresh and different from traditional hardwoods. It's minimal, but not boring.
- Ride feel: Light, quick, easy to flick.
- Why it's premium: Getting bamboo to look clean takes careful lamination and finishing — no shortcuts.
If you like a bright, modern build, bamboo is a fun choice.
🪵 F) Oak — Bold Grain with a Rugged Personality
Oak has a more aggressive grain pattern — less "perfect," more character. It's for people who like their gear to look like it's meant to be used.
- Ride feel: Sturdy, slightly heavier, confident landings.
- Why it's premium: Bold-grain woods show every detail — so the shaping and finishing have to be clean.
Great for a workhorse setup.
🌀 G) Burl — Nature's Chaos, One-of-One Every Time
Burl grain is wild: swirls, eyes, and patterns that look like topographic maps. No two pieces ever match — which is exactly the point.
- Ride feel: Varies by piece, but always feels "special" in-hand.
- Why it's premium: Burl is rare, unpredictable, and takes extra care to stabilize, shape, and finish without ruining the pattern.
🇻🇳 Burl — Vân kiểu xoáy/đốm/mắt chim, nhìn như bản đồ vậy. Không có cái thứ 2 giống y chang. Burl hiếm, khó làm, phải xử lý + finish kỹ để giữ vân đẹp.
If you want a true collector piece, burl is it.
👁️ H) Bird's Eye Maple — The Detail Nerd's Dream
This is maple with a twist: little dot patterns that shimmer under finish. It's subtle from far away, insane up close.
- Ride feel: Classic maple snap, with a more "boutique" look.
- Why it's premium: Good bird's eye is harder to find, and it's chosen for pattern — not just function.
