A high-quality steel bearing can still perform exceptionally well.

Ceramic is not automatically better in every situation—but it represents another stage in the continuing search for smoother and more consistent fingerboard performance.

Urethane Formulas and the Modern Market

Today's fingerboard wheel market is more diverse than ever.

Different companies use their own urethane formulas, often creating unique combinations of grip, hardness and rebound. Some wheels are extremely soft and grippy. Others are harder and designed to slide more easily.

This has created a market where wheel choice has become increasingly personal.

Two riders can use identical decks and trucks but create completely different setups simply by changing their wheels.

The growth of small independent manufacturers has also encouraged experimentation. Companies can develop small batches of new formulas, colours and shapes without needing the massive production volumes required by traditional toy manufacturers.

A modern 36mm setup with extremely narrow wheels would look and feel very different from a classic 29mm setup.

So where do fingerboard wheels go next?

The most likely answer is: further into specialisation.

As the fingerboard market continues to grow, manufacturers will keep experimenting with new urethane formulas, bearing materials, wheel profiles and manufacturing techniques.

We may see even more realistic reproductions of skateboard wheel technology. New compounds could be developed specifically for different surfaces. Riders may increasingly choose wheels based on technical performance rather than simply brand recognition or colour.

At the same time, there will probably always be a market for simple plastic wheels.

For beginners, casual riders and younger fingerboarders, affordable equipment remains important. Not everyone needs a premium urethane wheel with precision bearings to enjoy fingerboarding.

And that is perhaps what makes the evolution of fingerboard wheels so interesting.

The industry has not replaced the old with the new.

Instead, it has created more options.

From Toy Wheels to Performance Components

The evolution of fingerboard wheels represents one of the clearest examples of how far fingerboarding has come.
