Why Gorilla Glue Is a Bad Choice for Making Fingerboards

Gorilla Glue is not the best choice for making fingerboards because its expanding polyurethane formula fights against the precision, consistency, and clean finish that thin multi-ply wooden decks require.
Fingerboards are tiny skateboard decks, typically built from several ultra-thin wood veneers, often around 0.6 mm each, stacked, glued, and pressed in a mould to create a shaped, stiff platform with good pop.
The adhesive has to wet the wood evenly, hold alignment under clamping pressure, cure without distorting the thin layers, and leave a clean surface that can be sanded and finished. Original Gorilla Glue, the classic polyurethane version, fails several of these requirements in practice.
Expansion Creates Problems at Fingerboard Scale
The defining trait of original Gorilla Glue is that it expands as it cures, often significantly and sometimes by several times its applied volume. On large woodworking projects, this gap-filling behaviour can be useful. On a fingerboard, it is a liability.
Thin veneers have almost no thickness tolerance. Expanding foam pushes the plies apart, creates uneven glue lines, and can shift the stack inside the mould.
The result can be inconsistent thickness, soft spots, or a deck that no longer sits flat against the mould contours. Excess foam also squeezes out in messy, hard-to-remove ridges that interfere with shaping and sanding.
Precision builders prefer adhesives that stay where they are put.
Moisture Activation Risks Warping Thin Veneers
Gorilla Glue needs moisture to cure, and its instructions call for lightly dampening one or both surfaces.
Introducing water to paper-thin maple or other veneers is risky. The wood can swell unevenly, cup, or delaminate before the glue fully sets.
Fingerboard makers already have to manage humidity and grain-direction issues. Adding deliberate moisture complicates the process without a clear benefit for this application.
Mess, Cleanup, and Finish Quality Suffer
The cured foam is tough, porous, and difficult to sand cleanly. Squeeze-out hardens into irregular blobs that can stain the wood or leave a rough texture.
Cleaning wet Gorilla Glue is messy. Once cured, it is essentially permanent and resists solvents that would remove ordinary wood glue.
For a product that will be handled constantly and often finished with paint, clear coat, or grip tape, a clean, sandable glue line matters. PVA-type wood glues wash up with water while wet and sand smoothly when dry.
Bond Characteristics Are Not Ideal for the Application
Gorilla Glue produces a very strong, rigid, waterproof bond. That sounds good until you consider what a fingerboard actually needs: controlled stiffness, consistent flex across the length, and reliable performance under repeated finger pressure and impact.
An expanding, somewhat elastic polyurethane joint can introduce variability. Many experienced builders report that non-expanding wood glues, such as classic PVA or aliphatic resins like Titebond Original, deliver a more predictable, rigid laminate that holds its moulded shape and feels poppier in a controlled way.
Specialised fingerboard wood glues marketed for the same purpose are essentially refined versions of this approach: waterproof, fast enough, and non-expanding.
Practical Alternatives That Work Better
Most DIY fingerboard tutorials and commercial small-batch makers default to ordinary wood glue or dedicated fingerboard PVA formulations.
These give enough open time to align multiple plies, clamp cleanly in a mould, cure rigidly without swelling, and clean up easily.
For repairs or spot fixes, thin CA, or super glue, and carefully mixed epoxy can be useful. But the main structural lamination is best left to a non-expanding wood glue.
When Gorilla Glue Does Make Sense
Gorilla Glue has legitimate uses, including rough outdoor repairs, gap filling on larger projects, and bonding dissimilar materials when expansion is acceptable.
A five-ply maple fingerboard deck is simply not one of those uses.

Reach for a quality wood glue instead and your decks should come out of the mould cleaner, more consistent, and closer to the performance you want.
