This FAQ is a quick reference you can come back to anytime your setup starts feeling off — especially if you're building a desk-smooth setup.

The one rule that fixes most problems

Tighten and tune in this order:

  1. Baseplate screws (trucks to deck)
  2. Kingpin/locknut (truck tightness)
  3. Wheel nuts (last)

If you tighten wheel nuts first, you'll often kill the roll and still have noise.

FAQ

Why does my fingerboard rattle on a desk?

Rattle is almost always loose hardware. Fix it in this order:

  1. Tighten baseplate screws (trucks to deck)
  2. Set kingpin/locknut (truck tightness)
  3. Set wheel nuts last (remove wobble, then loosen slightly for roll)

Why do my wheels not spin?

Most common causes:

  • Wheel nuts are too tight
  • Bearings are dirty (hair/dust)
  • Bearings are low quality and feel sticky even when clean

Try loosening each wheel nut about 1/8 turn and spin again.

How tight should wheel nuts be?

Tight enough to remove wobble — then loosen slightly so the wheel spins freely.

If you tighten until it's quiet but the wheel barely spins, you're crushing the bearings.

Why do my wheels wobble side-to-side?

Wobble usually comes from:

  • Wheel nut not set correctly
  • Inconsistent wheel/bearing fit
  • Low-quality wheels/bearings

If you tune the nut and wobble stays, it's often time to upgrade wheels/bearings.

Why does my setup feel "twitchy"?

Twitchy usually means the trucks are too loose for your current control level — especially on a desk. For desk riding:

  • Start slightly tighter than you think
  • Roll straight, then do slow turns
  • Loosen only until it feels comfortable

Should beginners ride loose trucks or tight trucks?

For desk use, most beginners prefer stable (slightly tighter) trucks. It's calmer, quieter, and more predictable.

My setup feels cheap even after tightening everything — why?

Because "cheap feel" is mostly:

  • Roll consistency (wheels + bearings)
  • Stability (trucks)
  • Sound (rattle/wobble)

If tuning doesn't fix it, upgrade in this order:

  1. Wheels + bearings
  2. Trucks
  3. Deck + grip

What's the fastest upgrade for a desk-smooth feel?

Wheels + bearings. It's the biggest "wow" change for smooth roll and cleaner sound.

Should I buy a complete setup instead of upgrading?

If multiple things feel wrong, a tuned complete is often the simplest path.

If one thing is clearly bad (usually wheels/bearings), upgrading parts first is great value.
